What Can We Learn From Our Security Colleagues Across the Industry?

It’s easy to become siloed or overly focused in your own lane or discipline, but there is much we can learn from our colleagues across the industry who are experiencing similar challenges in different scenarios.

As EP professionals, what lessons can we learn from the solutions they’re implementing?

Elsewhere, we're looking at:

  • How Disciplined is Your Mind?

  • Trouble in the Congo

  • Friendly FARC?

Let's get into this.

The Circuit Magazine Podcast

This week we’re going on to the front lines of workplace violence to uncover the full extent of its impact on fellow security professionals and what they’re exposed to on a daily basis.

To unpack this, we bring in Training Manager Terry Conlon of RFC Security. With Terry’s help, we’re going to unpack this topic so that we can get a broader idea of the issues faced by our industry colleagues and what we can learn from their experiences.

In this episode we’ll discover:

  • The shocking statistics that lay bare the extent of workplace violence that security professionals are dealing with.

  • The impact that this exposure is having on our colleagues and across the wider industry.

  • Where we’re lacking as an industry and what we can do to address those shortcomings.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of the problems are rooted in training standards and as Terry so aptly puts it…

“If you don't address the fundamental flaws within the basic training, you're leaving yourself exposed”

From the Pages of the Circuit Magazine

In this article by Dr Liz Royle, we’re focusing on resilience building exercises that you can easily incorporate into your daily regime. But why is this important for protectors?

Think of the analogy of a high powered vehicle, fitted with bullet-proof glass and armoured shields, but nobody has bothered to top up the engine oil for a while? Your body and brain are the equivalent of this vehicle. You can build up your physical armour and strength but if you aren’t topping up the mental engine oil then you’re heading for the breaker’s yard.

When you are in a threatening situation, the sympathetic branch of your nervous system provokes a state of high readiness for responding to danger. This is your “fight or flight” response.

The more you practice the exercises in this article, the better able you are to discipline your mind when you most need it and the more resilient you will be.

Situation Report by RANE

Iraqi government formation talks are presaging a majority government that will look similar to Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi’s current government. In such a government, al-Kadhimi could retain his position, and Sadrists would be placed in prominent positions throughout federal and local governments.

Chinese officials are responding to a spate of recent attacks impacting Chinese nationals working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s mining industry. Heightened insecurity and the potential evacuation of Chinese citizens will harm mining operations, and these factors may also pressure the ongoing renegotiations between Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and Chinese extractives companies.
