Knowing A Little About Human Nature Goes a Long Way
Dear Network,
Welcome to another edition of On The Circuit, the only weekly newsletter which aims to inspire you to greatness and then gives you a kick up the backside if you take your eye off the ball! In this edition, I want to continue with the positive vibes that were oozing out of our Zoom screens yesterday when six Inspiring Individuals shared their harrowing life challenges and the heroic triumphs they achieved.
The event was different from typical industry events that we're used to. Instead of focusing on hard skills and what's wrong with the industry, we wanted to focus on what’s right. Sometimes Inspiration allows us to see things in a new way and enables us to break through perceived barriers to achieve things we may not have believed were possible. Yesterday did just that with these six remarkable individuals!
So, with that in mind, let me officially help you get your weekend started and leave you with a quote that I personally think sums up the collective message from yesterday:
Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. –Charles Swindoll
We've got you covered when you are busy covering others.
Inspiring Individuals Event
This incredible event took us on a journey through the lives of some of the industry’s most inspiring people and how, despite immense adversity, they have been able to seize life and inspire others through their words and through their deeds.

The Circuit Magazine Podcast, Episode 8
Understanding why people do what they do will help us identify threats and prevent incidents, making us better protectors. But understanding why WE do what WE do might be the key to even more significant growth.
In this week's podcast, we're joined by Miranda Coppoolse, a behavioral analyst and self-confessed "human nature freak!" She's here to help us dive into a subject that isn't taught in basic training but could be considered an essential skill for protectors.

In early December cybersecurity company, FireEye was breached, initially, this did not seem like anything more than a single target. Three days later they announced that they had uncovered a much larger breach, with a component in the SolarWinds Orion software having been altered for malicious purposes.
At this point, we can make some guesses about the motives of the attackers. If it was an organised crime group, then ransomware or similar would be used to cause as much chaos as possible and raise funds. Instead, the attackers moved slowly and carefully, identifying valuable targets – particularly intelligence targets. it is a reasonable assumption that an intelligence agency not motivated by a profit agenda is likely at fault.
Our cyber expert, James Bore, dissects and analyses the incident and offers key takeaways.
Like all skill development, soft skills take practice and a strong work ethic to develop. Non-verbal communication, also referred to as behavioral analysis, is no different. The person who puts in the most work will have the best results.
The amazing thing about this soft skill is that it requires no training facility. The ability to positively influence everyone around you is an invaluable tool for any executive protection agent. Non-verbal communication is a skill that we all have and actually use daily even if we are unaware of it.
Luke Daniel shares his extensive knowledge of behavioral analysis in this in-depth feature.
It's not unusual for practitioners of our craft to find themselves operating as "solo specialists" alongside their respective clients. The question is, are these days slowly coming to an end? If they are, how will we be able to convey this to our clients?
Mark Roche argues that the demands on the modern protector are fast making the idea of a solo operator obsolete. Do you agree?
