On the 1st of October 2009, Philip Young, a South African citizen, was incarcerated in Afghanistan after an incident which led to the fatal shooting of an Afghan National.

Young was ultimately sentenced to 7 years by the Supreme Court. "There is no presumption of innocence." Young explains. "The assumption is, if you are NOT guilty then why did the Police arrest you and why are you here?"

So what can we learn from Philip's experience? In this article, writing from Poli-Charki prison, exclusively for the Circuit Magazine, Philip lists what he deems as the most valuable lessons from the experience.

Situation Report by RANE

Indonesia's military development will escalate tensions with China, forcing Jakarta to accept the potential economic cost of Chinese retaliation.

In February, Indonesia purchased 42 French-made Rafale fighter jets, with talks of purchasing French submarines. Jakarta also signed a deal to buy 14 U.S.-made F-15EX fighter jets for $14 billion.

Indonesia's military buildup could dent the country's economic growth by harming its trade relationship with China. Indonesia, however, is unlikely to sacrifice national security and territorial integrity for economic continuity.

Indonesia's push to harden its defensive capabilities may not necessarily see increased cooperation with the United States, as Jakarta is likely to prefer working with regional actors on defense and security instead of working directly with China's main rival.

In December, Indonesia invited five other nations (Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam) to meet to discuss coordinated action against territorial aggression in the South China Seas. While they did not name China specifically, this meeting would indicate that Indonesia is likely to prioritize security over investment.

Final Thoughts

We've all experienced that feeling, one time or another, when no matter how hard we try, we're just not blending in with the environment!

This week, it was the turn of Cardi B’s bodyguard who was all work and no play as he rode the Mad Tea Party ride at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, keeping a close eye on the rapper and her 3-year-old daughter.

The video was taken by an onlooker who was not fooled by the protective agents blending technique and said she filmed it because “I thought it was funny to see a bodyguard looking so serious in the teacups.” Yep, we'll give you that one!
