The Talent vs. Diversity Divide
Real or Imagined?
Should the topic of diversity be a controversial point of discussion this day and age? Rather than serving as merely a check-box exercise, could the security industry actually gain tangible benefits with greater diversity?
In this week's edition of On the Circuit, we're going to explore the divisive topic of diversity in our industry. Needless to say, it is needed. But, how do we introduce more diversity without reducing the talent pool? And how do we make positions more attractive and attainable to candidates with different backgrounds?
Elsewhere, we're sharing the essential skills required for dealing with high conflict personalities. We also look at how North Korea is exploiting the Russia/Ukraine conflict. And finally, what can protectors learn from 'cool-hand' Mike?
Let's jump in.

Situation Report by RANE
North Korea's testing of an intercontinental ballistic missile marks a new step in the evolution of its strategic capabilities, likely triggering a reaction from Seoul that could lead to new South Korean tensions with China and improved South Korean ties with Japan.
North Korea's missile testing cycle was influenced, but not caused by, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the West's response. North Korea's missile testing runs on a three-year cycle, due to material and budget constraints, but Pyongyang took advantage of the coincidence that the Ukraine war was happening simultaneously to make a statement about its defensive capabilities to the West.
South Korea's response will likely involve acquiring and deploying anti-missile batteries, which could increase frictions with China while South Korean relations with Japan improve.
Incoming South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol has said he would like to increase Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) deployments, and possibly restart Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group negotiations regarding the permanent strategic placement of high-powered U.S. military assets on the peninsula.
The deployment of THAAD has angered China, as its radar reaches into Chinese territory. Japan, on the other hand, will likely welcome a more robust American presence in the region.
The United States will condemn the launch and could sanction key individuals involved in the North Korean missile program, but is unlikely to take any concrete military action against North Korea to avoid triggering a North Korean ICBM and possible nuclear response.

Final Thoughts
As the war between Russia and Ukraine escalates, it is also under threat from cyber security: with corporations and different companies, even individuals, standing by Ukraine and contributing to its forces various technological resources, cyber security is becoming more vital.
The war in Ukraine can serve as an example of how cyber warfare will play a role in future conflicts. As security experts have been monitoring Russia’s cyber activity for years, various hacker groups (like Anonymous) are now actively participating in the conflict.
This is a new phenomenon concerning hacker groups, which are actually expanding the battlefield out of geographical boundaries. Streaming and television services were also targeted as part of the attack, and even the Kremlin’s main website was hacked.
The space arena is likely to be the next focus of cyber warfare, with many threats lurking in the shadows, such as hacking satellites.
